Monty Hall Problem

Unusual, funny, famous and intriguing probability puzzle:
Suppose you're on a game show, and you're given the choice of 3 doors: behind one door is a car; behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say No. 1, and the host, who knows what's behind the doors, opens another door, say No. 3, which has a goat. He then says to you, "Do you want to pick door No. 2?" Is it to your advantage to switch your choice?

Lateral thinking 1

A man lives on the 10th. floor of a building. Every day, he takes the elevator to the 1st. floor to go to work or to go shopping. When he turns, he always takes the elevator to the 7th. floor and then walks the remaining flights of stairs to his apartment on the 10th. floor. Why does he do this?

Brain teaser 5

Imagine that you have 3 boxes, one containing 2 black marbles, one containing 2 white marbles, and the third, 1 black marble and 1 white marble. The boxes were labeled for their contents - BB, WW and BW - but someone has switched the labels so that every box is now incorrectly labeled. You are allowed to take one marble at a time out of any box, without looking inside, and by this process of sampling you are to determine the contents of all three boxes. What is the smallest number of drawings needed to do this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyixbMjxF8E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FTuSO-e5Ng

Lyrics:

Ela passou do meu lado
Oi, amor - eu lhe falei
Você está tão sozinha
Ela então sorriu pra mim

Foi assim que a conheci
Naquele dia junto ao mar
As ondas vinham beijar a praia
O sol brilhava de tanta emoção
Um rosto lindo, como o verão
E um beijo aconteceu

Nos encontramos à noite
Passeamos por aí
E, num lugar escondido,
Outro beijo lhe pedi

Lua de prata no céu,
O brilho das estrelas no chão
Tenho certeza que não sonhava
A noite linda continuava
E a voz tão doce que me falava
O mundo pertence a nós...

E hoje a noite não tem luar
E eu estou sem ela
Já não sei onde procurar
Não sei onde ela está

E hoje a noite não tem luar
E eu estou sem ela
Já não sei onde procurar
Onde está o meu amor.....

Anouk - Michel (lyrics)

Do you know this beautiful song from this Dutch singer?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wVZWDky6M4

Lyrics:

Hey Michel how's life are you ok
I wonder if you ever think of me
It's been 9 years since that kiss
I can help but reminisce
Hey Michel do you remember

We walked the street to the beat
Hand in hand you and me
Smiling faces so in love
Hoping that they all could see
That we belonged together you and me against the world
But we found out the hard way cause it wasn't meant to be

Now it's you and her I see

You were my first and worst love
And so it only could go wrong
But ain't that just the way you learn
Hey Michel I just wanted to let you know
That someone else has stolen my heart
And now another girl has caught your eye
That doesn't mean I don't think of you
I am just hoping that she'll treat you right

Do you remember
How we walked the street to the beat
Hand in hand and you and me
Smiling faces so in love
Hoping that they all could see
That we belonged together you and me against the world
But we found out the hard way cause it wasn't meant to be

Now it is you and her I see

It was just a silly dream

Hey Michel do you remember

The Pulp - The trees (lyrics)

Classic song from one of the best Brit bands:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvkiAw0ZIw4

Lyrics:

I took an air-rifle, shot a magpie to the ground & it died without a sound.
Your skin so pale against the fallen autumn leaves &
No-one saw us but the trees.
Yeah, the trees, those useless trees produce the air that I am breathing.
Yeah, the trees, those useless trees; they never said that you were leaving.
I carved your name with a heart just up above - now swollen,
Distorted, unrecognisable; like our love.
The smell of leaf mould & the sweetness of decay
Are the incense at the funeral procession here, today.
In the trees, those useless trees, etc.

You try to shape the world to what you want the world to be.
Carving your name a thousand times wont bring you back to me.
Oh no, no I might as well go & tell it to the trees.
Go & tell it to the trees, yeah.

Scott and Leon - You used to hold me (lyrics)

I used to listen to this song during the good times in Netherlands circa 2001:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y1nkeuLl_Y

Lyrics:
I remember, I remember, I remember, ...
I remember when you said that you loved me everyway
You loved me once, you loved me twice
But my boy hasn´t it been so nice?
You used to hold me
You used to feel me
You used to kiss me
You used to touch me
You used to please me
You used to squeeze me
You used to love me
You used to touch me
Baby, baby, I miss you so much
When you hold me with love and touch
You got to know...............................
...........................................................
You used to hold me
You used to feel me
You used to kiss me
You used to touch me
You used to please me
You used to squeeze me
You used to love me
You used to touch me

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHEwFoo_KA0

Lyrics:

Motorpsycho - The Slow Phaseout (lyrics)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRYAB11SNBw

Lyrics:

there's nothing I can do to begin to understand
I wouldn't dare to get near that quicksand
I'm watching your thrills from my home in the hills
to me it seems so bland
I look down from my mountain,
see lives passing by
on that four lane deep stir-fry
seeking sainthood, seeing human driftwood,
I feel like an alien spy

why do you do the things you do?
why do you do the things you do, you say...

there's no single reason, it just happened that way
now my mind is turning into clay
all of my days drift by in a daze
while I wish myself away

the blood on my hands will never fully dry,
I mislaid my alibi
the grail lost its sheen, now I just feel unclean
decomposing with a sigh

why do you do the things you do?
why do you do the things you do, you say...

withdraw to where I'm free from doubt
to simmer in this slow phaseout (beyond the point of caring)
to simmer in this slow phaseout (awoken from these dreams)

there's nothing I can do to begin to understand
I wouldn't dare to get near that quicksand
I'm watching your thrills from my home in the hills
to me it seems so bland

why do you do the things you do?
why do you do the things you do, you say...

withdraw to where I'm free from doubt
to simmer in this slow phaseout

why do you do the things you do
withdraw to where I'm free from doubt
to simmer in this slow phaseout

why do you do the things you do, you say...

Cocteau Twins - Carolyn's Fingers (lyrics)

My favourite from the Scottish Cocteau Twins:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh83z5vIP0w
Lyrics:

When he said, you are full of love
She fell down into this dirty mess
Some people see me laugh and tell us,
it's wrong to make fun of me

(even they don't give any more)
(try, try to fall)

She fell down into this mess
(even then they don't give)

(try, try to fall)

She fell down and he's so sick of it all
And of me
This part not out of her saw fit to drop
Whispers might prove it all

(you're just closer to me when you fall, but you broke)

This would prove it all

(you just closer to me, but you broke)

This would prove it all

Sleep now
You susur, try to talk
Reach out for that hand
Reach out for that hand

(and even they don't give any more)

(try, try to fall)

Even then they don't give

(try, try to fall)

You just closer to me at the fall
But you don't want, want me hand
You're just closer to me
But you don't want, want my hand

Brain teaser 1 (solution)

We have to be careful what we are adding together. Originally, they paid £30, they each received back £1, thus they now have only paid £27. Of this £27, £25 went to the manager for the room and £2 went to the bellboy.

10,000 Maniacs - Don't talk (lyrics)

One of my favourites, EVER:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK-9r9At2C4

Lyrics:

Don't talk, I will listen.
Don't talk, you keep your distance
for I'd rather hear some truth tonight than entertain your lies,
so take you poison silently.
Let me be. Let me close my eyes.

Don't talk, I'll believe it.
Don't talk, listen to me instead,
I know that if you think of it, both long enough and hard
the drink you drown your troubles in is the trouble you're in now.

Talk talk talk about it, if you talk as if you care
but when your talk is over tilt that bottle in the air,
tossing back more than your share.

Don't talk, I can guess it.
Don't talk, well now your restless
and you need somewhere to put the blame for how you feel inside.
You'll look for a close and easy mark and you'll see me as fair game.

Talk talk talk about it, talk as if you care
but when your talk is over tilt that bottle in the air
tossing back more than your share.

You talk talk talk about it, you talk as if you care.
I'm marking every word and can tell this time for sure,
your talk is the finest I have heard.

So don't talk, let me go on dreaming.
How your eyes they glow so fiercely I can tell your inspired
by the name you chose for me. Now what was it? O, never mind it.
We will talk talk talk about this when your head is clear.
I'll discuss this in the morning, but until then you may talk but I won't hear.

Saint Etienne - Nothing can stop us now (lyrics)

British dancing, groovy song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U50Uc3bbSCA

Lyrics:

[Annoucement sample:] "Thankyou, every - come on, give her a proper Liverpool hand, you can do better than that! And now ladies and gentlemen, what you've been waiting for:"

I've come a long way. /I've come a long, long way since the day you walked into my life. You walked into my life. / You smoothed out all the rough edges with your sweet love and devotion. I was tired, / in love like a fool. / I was tired of living the life of a fool, I was wondering where I'd gone wrong. But I know / it's gonna work out fine. / But I know it's gonna work out fine, when I see that look in your eyes. Yeah! /

I've never felt so good, / I've never felt so strong, / Nothing can stop us now! (no no, no no)
I've heard some people say. / Yeah, nothing can stop us now. I've heard people say that a man who needs a woman is weak, So wrong, oh so wrong. / but they're so wrong, because nobody can hide from love. Do, do you want to know? / Do you want to know, do you want to know something else that's true? It's true, it's true, the touch of your hand, oh. / Just the touch of your hand, and I know we can make it.

I've never felt so good, / I've never felt so strong, / Nothing can stop us now! / I've never felt so strong, / I've never felt so good, / Nothing can stop us now! (nothing! nothing!...)

Brain teaser 1

Three people check into a hotel. They pay £30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is £25 and gives £5 to the bellboy to return to the people. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that £5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets £2 and gives £1 to each person. Now each person paid £10 and got back £1. So they paid £9 each, totalling £27. The bellboy has £2, totalling £29. Where is the missing £1?

Glasvegas - Daddy´s gone (lyrics)

Listen to this wonderful song by the Scottish band Glasvegas:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uSdQxKaBfU

Lyrics:

Oh oh, how you are my hero
Oh, oh, how you're never here though
Remember times when you put me on your shoulders
How I wish that it was forever you would hold us

Oh, oh, right now i'm too young to know
How in the future it will affect me when you go
Oh, oh, you could have had it all
You, me, and mum y'now
Anything was possible
I won't be the lonley one
Sitting on my own and sad
A fifty year old
Reminiscing what I had
I won't be the lonley one
Sitting on my own and sad
A fifty year old
Reminiscing what I had

Forget your dad, he's gone
Forget your dad, he's gone

All I wanted was a kick-a-bout in the park
For you to race me home when it was nearly getting dark
How I could've been yours, and you be mine
It could've been me and you until the end of time
Oh, do what you want, when you want
Be as fucking insincere as you can
What kind of way is that to treat your wife
To see your son on saturdays
What way is that to live your life?

I won't be the lonley one
Sitting on my own and sad
A fifty year old
Reminiscing what I had
I won't be the lonley one
Sitting on my own and sad
A fifty year old
Reminiscing what I had

Forget your dad, he's gone
Forget your dad, he's gone

My favourite Mathematics Olympiad books

2 - “Geometry Revisited” – Coxeter e Greitzer
3 - “Episodes in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Euclidean Geometry” – Ross Honsberger
4 - “The Art and Craft of Problem Solving” – Paul Zeitz
5 - “Winning Solutions” – Edward Lozansky
Teoria com muitos exercícios resolvidos. Congruência, Progressões, Equações Diofantinas, Polinômios, Funções Geradoras, Combinatória etc.
6 - “Mathematical Olympiad Challenges” – Titu Andreescu
Pouca teoria, com exercícios resolvidos, propostos incluindo resolução. Exercícios muito interessantes e diferentes do tradicional. Inclui um capítulo sobre resolução usando Física.
7 - “Problem-Solving Strategies” – Arthur Engel
8 - “Mathematical Circles (Russian Experience)” – Dmitri Fomin
9 - “Mathematical Olympiad Treasures” – Titu Andreescu
10 - “Five Hundred Mathematical Challenges” – Edward Barbeau
Exercícios bem diferentes do tradicional.
11 - “The Contest Problem Book” – vários
12 - “The USSR Olympiad Problem Book” – Shklarsky e outros
Questões de alto nível das olimpíadas russas. Com resolução.
13 - “The IMO Compendium – 1959-2004” – Dusan Djukic, ...
– Edmilson Motta e outros
16 - “Olimpíadas Cearenses de Matemática – ensino fundamental” – Emanuel Carneiro e outros
Dá pra comprar pela Editora VestSeller
17 - “Olimpíadas Cearenses de Matemática – ensino médio” – Emanuel Carneiro e outros
Dá pra comprar pela Editora VestSeller
18 - “10 Olimpíadas Iberoamericanas de Matemática” – Eduardo Wagner e outros
19 - “A Path to Combinatorics for Undergraduates” – Titu Andreescu

“A Mathematical Mosaic” – Ravi Vakil
“Desafios” – Eduardo Veloso e José Paulo Viana
Qual a idade delas?”
